The workshops aimed to imagine what genomics research could look like in the next 25 years. Experts from different fields came together to talk about how new discoveries in genomics could impact medicine, manufacturing, and conservation. The goal was to explore new possibilities and solve potential problems. The ideas shared from these workshops help guide the Sanger Institute, Wellcome Trust, and other scientists in shaping the future of genomics.
The Wellcome Sanger Institute, based on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK, is a world-leading genomics research center focused on understanding how genetics influences health and disease.
To empower scientists from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the Institute runs the International Fellows Programme, offering funding, mentorship, and access to cutting-edge genomic tools.
Current Fellows lead impactful projects on maternal health in Uganda, antimicrobial resistance in Peru, and neglected tropical diseases in Southeast Asia. Their work strengthens scientific knowledge and builds research capacity in their home countries, creating a global network of genomics leaders..
